Engineering

PCD Engineering primarily consists of engineers and engineering associates dedicated to developing unparalleled DC and Pulsed power systems for accelerator magnets. Technical expertise and professional engineering services extend to Arc Flash Calculations (traditionally not a Power Electronics core skill) and power supply reliability.

Pulsed Power System Development pushes the speed of electronic power switches, thereby extending and finding new applications for insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology. It provides engineering design and support for klystron high voltage power supplies, pulse forming network (PFN) modulators, fast kicker pulsers, and other pulsed-power systems. Industry adopts many of the Section’s designs and concepts.

DC Power System Development undertakes development, design and fabrication of one-of-a-kind or technically difficult DC power supplies that are simply unavailable elsewhere. In addition to power supplies, the Section designs and assembles electronics circuits for control, precision regulation, monitoring and protection, as well as complete operating systems.

Electrical Systems Design and Coordination provides tray, raceway, cable, and rack installation design, coordination, and University technical representative (UTR) support for site-wide accelerator construction, experiments, upgrades, "down time" improvements and periodic maintenance. They ensure raceway and cable compliance with the National Electrical Code and other safety requirements. The Section participates with other groups to keep the CAPTAR cable and rack database up-to-date.
