- Processing cable installation job orders through the cable shop or to contractors.
- Assigning cable numbers to new cables.
- Entering this information into the captar database.
- Producing job order reports.
- Producing cable tags containing pertinent cable information.
- CAPTAR stands for cableplant tracking and reporting
- The cableplant database is used primarily to tie together various assemblies through the use of cables, wires, and cross-connects.
- The CAPTAR database is an Oracle relational database which resides on a UNIX machine. most of this information is accessible to the user through the web.
- The address or url of the captar home page is:
http://www.slac.stanford.edu/eprise/cable/captar/captar.html
The CAPTAR home page contains the following options:
- Cableplant notes
- Rack profile search
- Crate profile search
- Wirelink search
- Cable search
- Wirelist (faston terminal blocks)
- Additional search (see following example of home page)
- Select rack profile search from CAPTAR home page.
- Enter desired location or building.
- Enter rack number if known.
- Entering building or location only will display a list of racks for that building or location.
- See the following examples in this section.
- The rack will display both front and back if there is an assembly in the back of the rack.
- Each assembly has an assembly description, i.e. "multibus crate" and an assembly type, i.e. "123-631-00."
- Clicking on the hypertexted description, "multibus crate", will bring up a "cable location" list if there are cables attached to that assembly.
- Clicking on the hypertexted Camac crate description, "SLC powered Camac crate", will bring up the crate display screen.
- Clicking on the hypertexted "Slot" number will bring up the "cable location" list for that slot (the following example shows the cable location list for slot 16).
- Clicking on the hypertexted "SLAC number" will display "CATER" information if available (our department does not maintain this information.)
- Clicking on the assembly description in a rack or a slot number in a crate will display a "cable location" listing.
- Clicking on the hypertexted cable number on the "cable location" screen will bring up a termination listing if the cable pins are linked in the database. otherwise you will receive a "no data found" message.
- See the following samples of cables with termination listings or "no data found". (interpret the termination listing as both conductor 1.s are linked together, 2.s are linked together, etc.)
- Clicking on "crate profile search" on the captar home page will bring up the "crate profile search" screen.
- You have the option of entering either the location(or building), rack, side, and elevation of the crate or the micro and crate numbers. if you don.t know the micro and crate number, entering the location information will display that information.
- Submitting your query will display the "crate locations" screen. If you query on the location(or building) only you will receive a list of "crate locations".
- Clicking on the appropriate hypertexted location will bring up the "crate profile" screen.
- This screen allows you to search for the pin connections of a cable if you do not know the cable number.
- Enter the information you know about a cable into the appropriate field or fields.
- If the pins are linked in the database, a pin-to-pin connections screen will be displayed.
- This search allows you to find the termination or pin connections of a cable if all you know is the cable number.
- Enter cable number. if the pins are linked in the database, a termination listing will be displayed.
- Same numbered conductors are linked to each other, i.e. 1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc.
Clicking on the "additional search" option on the captar home page brings up a menu of other captar reports that may be useful.
-
Description of a specific assembly
- Enter the "assembly type" on the "configuration generator" screen. the assembly type is different than the assembly description. sometimes it.s a drawing number. sometimes it.s just a label we have assigned to an assembly to identify it.
- This search returns a report showing the connector and pin information for the desired assembly type.
-
Termination points for a specified cable
- This report is just like "cable search" but the report display is a little different.
- Input the cable number to get the origin and destination termination points for each pin.
-
Locate a cable between areas
- If you are trying to find cables between 2 buildings or locations and have no other information, you can submit this query. it will usually help you narrow your search.
-
Cable list for an assembly
- This report shows all the cables linked to an assembly. all fields need to be entered to produce a report. Enter a dash .-. in the slot field if there is no slot.
- The report returned displays the cable numbers linked to the queried assembly plus the connector and pin number . It also shows the location, connector, pin and assembly type and description information at the other end of the cable.
-
Locations of an assembly type
- This query will find all locations of an assembly in a specific building or location. Both fields need to be entered: assembly type and building or location.
-
Wirelist for a faston terminal block
- You can also access this query from the CAPTAR home page.
- You can use this query to search for cable connections and cross-connects to faston terminal blocks.
- Enter the location or building, rack and terminal block in the "terminal block" query screen. This query returns the report for all the connections to that block.
-
Cable list for a rack
- Querying on location(or building) and rack will display a report showing all cables connected to assemblies in that rack.
- The cable information displayed includes cable number and origin and destination information.
-
Customized cable listing
- The fields in this query default to wildcards. highlight these wildcards, .%., and type over them to enter information in any field.
- Entering information in any field should return a report of all cable information related to the field you entered.
- Enter as much information as you can to reduce the search and wait time for this report.
- Clicking on "cableplant notes" on the captar home page will bring up the document used by the cable department for reference.
- This document contains cable types and descriptions, connector types and descriptions, color code tables for cables and the cable installation notes.
- This document guides users when writing job orders for cable installation. This cableplant documentation is also available in hard copy.
- The table of contents of this document is hypertexted in the web version. This enables the user to jump to the desired portion of the document without scrolling through the entire document.
- Clicking on the hypertexted "TOC" that appears throughout the web document will return you to the table of contents.
- The following sample page shows the cable installation schedule.
- This section enables the person writing the cable installation job order to indicate to the shop or contractor what to install and who will do the work.
- The following sample page shows a color code table.
- These tables show the color codes for multiconductor cables and what cable types they are used with.
- These tables give additional information to the person writing the job order or installing the cable.
- This sample page shows the cable type and its description. also, what color code table and termination type to use with that cable type.
- The bold-faced slac SN in this document indicates that the "SN" is hypertexted in the web document. clicking on these sn.s takes you to the stores database so you can check the quantity on hand. a sample of the stores screen is included here.
- This sample page shows the termination type, description, application using the termination, and the cables usually terminated with this type.
- The SLAC "sn" in bold type here indicates that it is hypertexted in the web version of this document. clicking on the "sn" number takes you to the stores database. here you can check the quantity on hand.
- Requesters and other users need to provide the cable installation information to the documentation department to enter into the CAPTAR database. The method of doing this is as follows:
- Excel spreadsheet
- The power conversion documentation department will provide assistance filling out these forms to new users.
Excel spreadsheet:
- The documentation department will provide an excel spreadsheet template to anyone desiring to use this method.
- Because this template is based on the fields in the actual captar database, we would prefer you not modify this template. some fields are required. the template indicates the maximum number of characters per field.
- After the spreadsheet is completed by the user or requestor, the documentation department uploads this information via computer program to the captar database.
- The two main types of output from CAPTAR besides using the web:
- Job order reports
- Cable tags
Job order reports:
- Job order reports contain all the information obtained from either the excel spreadsheet or the manual coding sheets given to documentation by the requestor.
- Cable numbers are assigned by the documentation department. All assigned and unassigned numbers are maintained in an excel spreadsheet.
- The job order reports also contain revision numbers if the information was changed after first printed.
Cable tags:
- Cable tags are printed for the shop to tie to the cable.
- The tags contain most of the pertinent information from the job order report.
- There are 2 tags, one for each end of the cable.
